Hello NSGQ members!

It is my pleasure to announce the quilt challenge for our 2025 Quilt Show “A Little Bit of Whimsy”. This challenge is inspired by the ‘International Honor Quilt: Women Remembering Women’, which was the subject of our Guest Speaker Dana Jones’ lecture in March of 2023. As you remember, the International Honor Quilt was made up of individual equilateral triangle shaped quilts “honoring” a woman who influenced the maker. Everyone was so inspired by this presentation.

With this in mind, our 2025 challenge will be to create a pennant shaped triangle quilt, 20 inches across the top and 20 inches from the middle of the top to the tip at the bottom.

Please see the below image to get the idea of the size and style of the pennant:

Here are the requirements for the Challenge:

  • 1. The subject is “whimsy”, to honor our 2025 quilt show. Whimsy is defined as:
    • – An unusual, unexpected, or fanciful idea; a whim.
      – A fanciful or fantastic device, object, or creation especially in writing or art.
      – Extravagant, fanciful, or excessively playful expression.
      – Behavior which is unusual, playful, and unpredictable, rather than having any serious reason or purpose behind it.
  • 2. The quilt must be the size of the triangle 20″ across the top and 20″ from the middle of the top to the tip of the bottom (a pennant shape).
  • 3. The quilt must have a hanging sleeve included on the back. The quilt can be hung from the base, the side or the tip.
  • 4. A 2025 Challenge Quilt/Quilt Show entry form must be completed by the March 2025 guild meeting. Please DO NOT submit a photograph of your quilt for the entry (we want the reveal of your quilt at the April meeting and we can get photos then.)
  • 5. Your quilt must be finished and brought to the April 2025 guild meeting.
  • 6. Your quilt will be displayed at the 2025 Quilt Show May 2025.

You can draft your own pattern for the size of the pennant, pick up a pre-cut paper pattern at our guild meetings, or print your own from a .pdf document on our website.

Here is a schematic to draft your own triangle:

You can also download and print the file Whimsy Guild Challenge 2025 pattern.pdf
Here are the instructions to print the pattern on 8-1/2″ x 11″ sized paper and tape together to get the right size:

  1. Download the file and save it to your computer.
  2. Open the program called Adobe Acrobat. If you don’t have Adobe Acrobat you can download this program from http://www.adobe.com.
  3. In Adobe open the .pdf file. You should see the Triangle on your screen.
  4. At the top of the screen on the right-hand side click on the Printer ICON (it looks like a printer). A print dialogue box should open up.
  5. In the print dialogue box select:
  • -Pages to Print (select ALL)
  • -Page Sizing and Handling (select POSTER)
  • -Select an OVERLAP size (I used .10) – this is the amount of paper to overlap.
  • -Select CUT MARKS – these are little registration marks to help line up the paper.
  • -Select LABELS – this will print the page number at the top of each piece of paper.
  • -PRINT. You should get 9 pieces of paper. Tape them together to create the pattern.

Construction Tips!

Final Thoughts…

Bring your quilt to the April 2025 meeting for judging by membership. Have FUN with this challenge. The possibilities are endless. Good Luck!
