Workshop Description:

MJ will show you how to create sparkling gem blocks using the design and piecing techniques she relies on to create her signature giant gem quilts. During this fast-paced class, students will create their own singularly beautiful work of faceted design.

  • Over the course of a single day-long session, students will learn how to:
  • Create a freezer paper pattern based on a mock-up of a bite-size gem that she will provide
  • Understand how different types of fabric impact the flow of light and color across their design
  • Assemble the fabric facets to create your own block of faceted color.

Note that this technique is not foundation paper piecing. There is no sewing to paper or tearing paper out of the back of your quilt block when it is finished. Instead, this is traditional piecing using freezer paper as your templates.

Supply List:

  • MJ will bring freezer paper for class. However, if you wish to purchase freezer paper, you can do so at your local grocery store or from Amazon. Freezer paper should be 18” wide.
  • Colored pencils in the colors of the gem you wish to create
  • Highlighter
  • Regular pencils
  • Ball point pen or permanent markers
  • Eraser
  • Bie Wite-Out tape or similar brand – do not use Liquid Paper or Liquid Wite-out as these will make a mess on your iron
  • 18” ruler and small ruler with ¼” measurements
  • 6-8 business size envelopes
  • Domestic sewing machine and thread assortment – neutral colors or colors that match your fabrics
  • Scissor and rotary cutting tools (cutter and mat). Bring 2 rotary cutters if you want to cut paper with one and fabric with another
  • Iron and ironing pad
  • Fabric: fat quarters of cotton solids or gradients. Consider bringing a range of values (light, medium, dark) within one or two colorways. This project works best when you have a very dark value, a very light value, and a range of 2-3 medium values. White and black also work well to bump up the bling in your gem.

Experience: Beginner-friendly; must be familiar with her/his own sewing machine

Workshop Policies

Video or audio recording of class material is strictly prohibited, and may be cause for dismissal from the class without a refund.

Workshop registration is reserved for NSQG members July through September, unless otherwise posted.

No seat in any workshop is reserved until payment has been received.

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to in-person classes to set up . For virtual workshops, the link will open approximately 15 minutes prior to class time so you can ensure your connectivity.

Cancellation policy: If NSQG cancels the workshop, it is fully refundable to attendees. If participants cancel attendance at a workshop, it is only refundable if the spot can be filled by another attendee.

For full day workshops, a lunch break of one hour is included. For in-person workshops, lunch is not included in the price. The programs chair will provide details about food policies at the venue.

Be prepared. This includes having all items on the supply list, a sewing machine in good working order, and basic sewing supplies and an extension cord/power strip. Also useful: a small iron and an ironing surface that may be shared with other students.

Silence phones during class. If you need to make or take a call, please exit the classroom.

Visitors are very distracting and are not allowed other than during the lunch break.

If you know you have to leave class early, please try to sit in the back of the room to avoid disturbing the rest of the class.

Please refrain from wearing perfume.
