Carl Hentsch

Carl’s quilting adventures began at the age of six when he created a quilt for a soon-to-be-born niece with his mother’s help. His niece used that blanket until it was tattered and torn, and even then she still carried it in her pillowcase. By the time his niece was walking he was designing dresses for her–again with his mother’s help.  In addition to quilting, Carl learned embroidery, pattern design, and knitting from his family.

In the 1990s Carl’s tried quilting again when he discovered Alex Anderson and Eleanor Burns on television. When Eleanor’s son appeared on her show, he knew he had to try–and he ran to the closest fabric store. And he says, “After seeing that mess, I am amazed I tried again!”

Carl’s passion for quilting re-emerged around 2006 in St. Joseph, Missouri, where they have some wonderful quilt shops. His first design, Super Nova, appeared in an AQS show in Knoxville. Then his design Anemone appeared in another show in Des Moines. After that came the books, and as people clamored for his patterns, 3 Dog Design Company was born.
